The city of Montreal takes its name from the Island of Montreal, which was named after Mount Royal, the mountain in the center of the Island. In 1535, explorer Jacques Cartier named the mountain Mons realis (Mount Royal) [archive]. In 1556, Italian geographer Giovanni Battista Ramusio translated Mount Royal to Monte Reale on a map. In 1575, François de Belleforest became the first to write Montreal, writing: "... in the middle of the countryside is the village, or Royal City joined to a cultivated mountain, which city the Christians called Montreal. »
